Bard’s Tale II walkthrough part 9: The Grey Crypt

(if you missed it, go back to part 8)

The Grey Crypt is not found in any city; instead you’ll find the entrance in the Wilderness

Once you enter you need to answer “grey” to gain access to the crypt. Less difficult than other riddles in the game.

The Grey Crypt looks (and sounds!) suitably spooky. Both levels of this dungeon are entirely anti-magic. You can’t cast spells, except Scry Site. You can use items which cast spells, including the segment you received in Oscon’s, which helpfully casts Batchspell.

Level 1

Your task on level 1 is to visit the sphinx and answer its riddle, as this activates the stairs down to the second and final level. Teleports help you move between sections of the dungeon. In the map above, the squares without an ‘A’ on them contain traps.

Teleport 1 (N5 E3): teleports you to N13 E3

Teleport 2 (N13 E16): teleports you to N5 E16

Teleport 3 (N15 E21): teleports you to N11 E21

Sphinx (N7 E1): answer “Wize One” to activate the stairs down

Stairs down (N18 E0): take you to level 2

Level 2

Level 2 is a maze, pick up your final Dreamspell word, and then head straight to the vampire dragon, and from there into the snare.

Stairs up (N18 E0): takes you up to level 1

Dreamspell clue (N11 E4): this Magic Mouth gives you the word SHIELD for the Dreamspell.

Vampire dragon (N5 E1): defeat this dragon to gain access to the snare

Teleport to snare (N6 E0): once you have defeated the dragon, go here to be teleported to N8 E11 and the start of the snare.

First things first. Head to N0 E13 to turn off the spinner at N4 E16, as this will help massively when you are walking to and fro.

Note there are two teleports here, which you should avoid once you’ve turned off the spinner.

Teleport 1 (N8 E12): teleports you to N0 E20. Use this when you first arrive to quickly reach N0 E13 and turn off that spinner.

Teleport 2 (N0 E12): teleports you to N8 E20. Again use this once, immediately after turning off the spinner, then never again.

Right, on to the snare proper!

To complete this snare, you need to complete the following sequence 3 times, strictly in order:

Visit the grey mage (N4 E21)

Visit Room 1 via the door at N4 E14 and move to the Magic Mouth in the middle of the room. Do this in the right order, and you will get the message of “yes, I think you’ve got it”

Visit the blue mage (N4 E11)

Visit Room 2 via the door at N6 E16 and move to the Magic Mouth in the middle of the room

Visit the grey mage (N4 E21)

Visit Room 3 via the door at N2 E16 and move to the Magic Mouth in the middle of the room

Visit the blue mage (N4 E11)

Visit room 4 via the door at N4 E18 and move to the Magic Mouth in the middle of the room

At your third visit to room 4, the Magic Mouth will give you the sixth segment. You will also be teleported back to the Wilderness, right outside the grey Crypt, so that your party (or what is left of it) can move on without further mishap.

With this complete, you are ready to head to the Destiny Stone.
