Bones: the big dragon
I’ve painted the dragon from the Dragons Don’t Share boxed set that was originally released as part of the Bones II Kickstarter. I bought mine at retail in 2015.
It’s a big model, possibly my largest. As such it’s my entry to Ann’s 60-day Miniatures of Magnitude challenge. You get more idea of the scale with some ‘normal’ sized models being around it:
The dragon towers over those other models very nicely.
I did a few new things with this dragon. The body and scales were painted up from a very dark green/black mix. The wings were done with contrast paints. The eye has an ‘eye of Mordor’ feel to it
All told, I’m happy with how this model came out.

Wow very impressive, Dave – both size and paint! How did you manage to prime it to avoid the dreaded “Bones-itis?”

The model had been under the house for a few years, so it has a few spots and things on it. I have it a very brief rub over with a cloth and then used a mix of black craft paint and green for the first coat over everything except the wings. The wings got a coat of Wraithbone.
The craft paint clings really well to the material, which is probably more luck than planning!

Nice! Congrats on getting it finished. I’m gonna have to slap some paint on mine as well one of these days.
I heard someone else talk recently about craft paints working really well on bones.. I have yet to try it . I usually brush on an undercoat with one of reaper’s liner paints on mine, then a zenithal spray with a rattle can. Haven’t had any problems with tackiness so far when prepping like that.

Thanks Fredrik! I think what worked best with the craft paint is that I never used it by itself. Even the darkest parts were mixed with a green hobby acrylic from vallejo. I think that stopped the different texture of the craft paint from taking over the model.
I’ve also been lucky with Bones and have avoided the stickiness on all but 2 models. Both of those involved painted metallics over a brush on undercoat, so I’ve avoided doing that since.

Very cool and you are right — that is no small dragon! It is certainly a miniature of magnitude and probably looks even bigger when you’re a 7th level fighter, who thinks he is pretty hot stuff, and then sees this thing up in the air blotting out the sun. Hopefully it is only looking for directions to the chlorine factory, where it is a minority share holder and favored supplier, and not looking, say, to gas Laketown.
