Johannes Voss has provided me with some of my favourite illustrations on Magic cards, especially the fantastic Restoration Angel. His art is usually bright and focused on a single figure, but have a look at the sky and other surroundings too; there’s great details to be found there.
Restoration Angel
Let’s start with my favourite, beautiful yet understated colours in this piece.
Gift of Orzhova
A gift of stained glass wings? Can’t see a problem there! In this piece the background colours are muted and limited to better show off the varied and bright colours of the wings.
Stoneforge Mystic
This card is popular more due to its in-game power than the art, but this piece from a promotional printing of the card is still eye-catching.
Commander’s Authority
It’s not often that we see characters only in silhouette on a Magic card, but this is executed brilliantly.
Elite Inquisitor
The point of view is interesting in this piece, as we are looking up at this skilled warrior from the floor. Are we an initiate who had just been easily bested? Or are we a foe about to be summarily dispatched? The tidy room and weaponry on the wall suggests the former to me.

Are those all from Avacyn Restored?

The majority are! Gift of Orzhova is from Gatecrash, and obviously the promo is from later too.

I liked Avacyn Restored, but the whole storyline from Shadows over Innistrad really ruined it for me. Oh well, there’s always another plane to play on…
