2018: the year of the tray
After meeting 2017’s target of 100 models painted, I started to rethink the notion of having a numerical target. Instead my 2018 target is simply to paint as often as I can, preferably 3-4 times per week.
I bought a cheap tray to store any models where I have assembled and undercoated, and started to paint them, or feel I am about to start. They tray will be the basis of how I track my activity.
Each time I do some painting, no matter how small the change, I’ll take a new photo like the one below.
Over time, the models in the tray will change, become complete, and leave. There’s lots of space right now for more models to be added, but I’ve no intention of filling the tray with unpainted models. That’s what boxes under the house are for!
At the end of each month I will have a tray update post with a slideshow of that month’s updates. If I stick to my 3-4 times per week target, this should involve 12-16 separate images.
This year my painting target is activity-based, and I’ll use these images to track my activity.

Heck, sounds like you need to buy either a condo or one of those self-storage units just to keep all your stuff in.
Of course, the fees on self-storage units would probably eat up ALL the money for your models. But then you wouldn’t have to worry about having a backlog to paint.
It’s a Lose-Lose situation for you no matter how you look at it. The best kind!

You jest, but it’s more difficult to store miniatures once they are painted, and I am looking around at glass cabinets and other solutions!

Yes, you can varnish them to reduce the impact of chipping, but for storage fitted foam in a box or freestanding on display are the best options

Interesting way to keep track. It should be visually interesting at the very least. Will you have a second tray for the completed models, so you/we can watch them grow?

Yes, I’ll be doing something similar to the evolving display of finished models. I want to get some industrial terrain pieces done this year and if so the completed display will end up looking different this time around.

It’s a good way to do it. I use an old chopping board (smaller than your tray) as a mobile paint station. All my current paint queue are on it and due to limited space focuses my attention. It also means I have to finish something to make space for the next batch.

the board is more full now than when I took that first shot, for sure! I just have to be careful to balance getting things on there with getting overwhelmed by how much is on there.
