Talking about money

Twitch was the subject of a massive hack recently, and by massive I mean everything about the site was exposed, including the earnings of its streamers over the past 20 months.

Lots of people are uncomfortable talking about how much they earn, and it’s also unusual to see your earnings suddenly and unexpectedly exposed. Most have reacted with some degree of horror, but others have taken the opportunity to talk about earnings more generally.

The video below is from a Magic content creator who both streams on Twitch and posts daily videos on YouTube. It make for interesting listening, he talks about his Twitch earnings, and then doubles down on the leak by also talking about and showing his YouTube earnings.

If you’re not familiar, you may find this a fascinating look at the economics of being a full-time online content creator, and what subscription and viewer numbers can mean in terms of income.

At least one other Magic Twitch streamer has watched this video and then talked about moving more content over to YouTube. The income disparity between the two platforms seems quite extreme, but others possible have the opposite experience.

Wellthat actually surprised me. When he was talking about streamers doing 4-6 hours a day (I think it was a day) and he said he got $20000+ … I was like , what’s the panic. Then he showed his YouTube… what…how much! That was on his 8 hours a week…. definitely in the wrong job here. I can now see why people panic over demonetization on YouTube.

Yes, I wonder if a number of streamers will suddenly start YT channels after seeing that, or hearing the same thing from others who use both channels.
