Vallejo are getting in on the Contrast paint game, with new range called Xpress Color. The initial range will consist of 23 paints, so they are starting well behind the current Contrast range in terms of selection. Still, it’s Vallejo, so it’s worth taking a look.
In this video Juan Hidalgo (who worked as a tester during the development phase) takes us through each of the colours. It’s an okay introduction video as he paints each of the colours in turn, and in many cases suggests as space marine legion the colour would suit.
However his video does something I am liking less and less – painting models (in this case a backpack) using just one colour. In this video we don’t’ get to see a varied miniature using a number of these paints.
I don’t paint my models using only one colour, and while the tests are a decent way of seeing the hue of this new range, I would also like to see how they look together on a model. At the start of the video he mentions the paints do not reactivate, but then we don’t see the truth of that since paints never follow one another onto the same model.
Disappointing. However I will be looking forward to the release of this range. Is it possible to have too many paints? I think not!
edit: Azazel has kindly linked to an earlier video where Juan does exactly what I wanted to see – paints a model using these new paints. You can watch that one below:

It’s a nice starting range. It would have been nice to see something painted with a few different colours, but we should get people doing that soon.

Thanks – I see I missed the video I was wanting to watch!

I think he did use at least some of them as part of a regular paintjob on an ogre fairly recently?

I didn’t catch that one, it would have been nice to see even one mini painted as part of the review

Cheap alternatives to contrast paints are sorely needed. I only use them as washes to tint metal colors, but if it means, paying half the price it is totally worth that someone produced a shitty youtube-video. lol ( I actually only use Gryph Charger Grey haha)

The price difference is greater than I was expecting for sure.

Only trouble is no one knows when they will be available to buy

I have heard December/January, but I would not recommend holding up a project waiting for new paints, better to keep going with whatever you have available now!
