It has only taken 20 years since the game’s inception, but Dwarf Fortress now has a tutorial. The famously difficult game of building and maintaining your fortress of dwarfs has been in continuous development since 2002, a real labour of love.
The game is sitting quietly on my Steam wishlist with a release date of ‘time is subjective’.
Hopefully the tutorial will make starting this game less intimidating for many. The write up shows part of the testing:
To make the tutorial all it can be, we found the ultimate play tester: my wife Annie. There are a lot of base-building games out there now, enough to make Dwarf Fortress easier to get into. She doesn’t play any of them. The closest she gets to DF is Overcooked 2. After one failed attempt with the original, the latest version of the tutorial allowed her to get good enough at the game to tunnel under a bog and drown her fortress.
I’m going to wait a while before I try this one out!
That’s pretty cool. Like most, I’ve heard a lot about this game and was always intrigued about it. Still have yet to play it, but this might help draw me in.

I feel that a tutorial done well could help. I found with both Crusader Kings III and Foot ball Manager the tutorials tells you everything all at once, and so you get overloaded with info, and then it’s not around to help when you have forgotten something.

I really should check this out. Should have done so actually after watching sseth and arch play it. But now I don’t even have to learn it. hm
