Surprise Hashut

Hashut was the chaos god worshipped by the Chaos Dwarfs of the Old World. We haven’t heard much from or of Hashut since the retirement of classic Warhammer. And honestly, even before that the Chaos Dwarfs were hardly front and centre, having lacked anything other than a ‘White dwarf presents’ army book (barring fan-made alternatives).

Hashut is back though, and now he has… human followers? In Warcry?

Warhammer Community tells us that “the humans that make up the Horns of Hashut have spent their lives living among the Chaos-worshipping duardin” So while these followers are humans, the Chaos Dwarfs might not be far behind.

There was a Chaos Dwarf or two in the Iron Golems box back at the beginning of Warcry:

He’s at the back, holding two hammers. However this could potentially mean a Chaos dwarf faction for Age of Sigmar, which would be a welcome sight.

Excellent. Sad though that I have still yet to paint the first edition of Chaos Dwarfs!

You’re not alone there at least… still, I’m definitely looking forward to the new ones!

Now I know a certain section of the internet (that being the section that always complains about everything…) is very upset that the Horns of Hashut are human rather than dwarves but honestly I think it makes a lot of sense. More and more I’m convinced that the theme of the various warbands for this edition of Warcry is going to be “known Chaos factions… but different”. We’ve seen Nurgle – but rather than being fat lads with lots of sores and their guts on the outside they’ve been skinny little guerillas on stilts. We’ve seen Warriors of Chaos in the form of the Chaos Legionaries, but rather than hulking barbarians in furs they look like a (somewhat) organised military with their own unique but cohesive aesthetic. My theory is that over the coming year we’ll see “Khorne… but different”, “Slaanesh… but different”, “Tzeentch… but different” – maybe even Skaven and Beastmen if we’re lucky. And how do they do “Hashut… but different”? Well by making his followers not Dwarves but humans. This also allows them to introduce the fanbase to a new aesthetic for the AoS era. Continuing to speculate without evidence I suspect that when the Chaos Dwarves do reappear in AoS they’ll have a very different look to that which they had in WHFB and this let’s them pave the way, setting the fanbase up for the new style rather than springing it on them all at once and being met with a chorus of “but I wanted big hats, big noses and curly beards!”.

I think you’re right with the ‘chaos, but different’ take for Warcry. The articles mentioned the chaos dwarfs who worship Hashut enough times that I’m confident they will arrive in some form over the next couple of years.

To be pernickety you missed out the excellent Tamakhan (however it’s spelt) forge world book that had a chaos dwarf army list it. Definitely worth getting (though it goes for an arm and a leg)!

Hopefully we won’t have to wait long to see the chaos dwarfs themselves!
