The pull of space hulks

Space hulks are the dungeons of Warhammer 40,000. A space hulk is a gigantic agglomeration of derelict space ships, pulled together over millennia into a distinct mass.

These massive objects are a plague to the Imperium, but also an opportunity for the brave. With centuries of technology represented with them, a space hulk offers the chance of rich hauls of technological artefacts. Anyone boarding a space hulk needs to beware since they also become havens for Orks, genestealers, and chaos forces.

The Space Hulk board game has taught us that boarding this mass is often a one-way trip for even the most elite warriors, but not every space hulk is the death trap that board game might have you believe. Even if there’s something else aboard this mass of ruined hulls and drifting rock, you might never disturb it in your search for ancient technological treasures. Good luck with that.

Warhammer Community has a short article for those unfamiliar with space hulks as a feature of the Warhammer 40,000 universe.

I am surprised that space hulks have been so underused as battleground or drivers of scenarios for the wider game of Warhammer 40,000. Green tabletop fields with woods and fortifications are one thing, but the claustrophobic halls of decayed space ships is something else.

Hopefully this new version of Kill Team will push space hulks as a battleground more.

Space hulks are such a phenomenal piece of the setting and a source of endless gaming opportunities. Excited to see what they do with this and Kill Team. Thanks for sharing!

I’m looking forward to seeing what they do with the terrain around this Kill Team release. There’s so much more they could be doing with this setting within a setting IMO.

It really is an inspired bit of fever-dream worldbuilding. “Ok, our setting needs a sci-fi dungeon, but let’s make it the most *metal* version of this concept that you can possibly imagine!”

I rember when the original Deathwing came out. My friends and I played it for ever. Funnily enough I have just started playing it on the console. It plays exactly the same as the original game from what I remember… by all accounts the hulk is going to be Kroot against IG from what I have heard…everyone knows a hulk is inhabited by either chaos or genestealers not Kroot.

Probably comes as a surprise to many, but I had the original Space Hulk game and thought it was brilliant! Be interesting to see how this latest manifestation turns out!

What I’m hoping for is a 3D board that lets you play whatever games you want using the Space Hulk as your setting, but we’ll see.
