Scent of a Gamer

From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.

What’s next?

I started this blog 10 and a half years ago primarily to track my miniature painting projects. With everything painted now, is this the end of the blog?

Short answer: no.

Longer answer:

It’s the end of this phase of the blog, and I think content that comes later will be… different from what has come before. Yesterday’s Arta Monday post is the final one of that series. I like posting art each week, but the WordPress changes earlier this year means it’s not in my interests to keep posting large images.

Obviously I won’t be posting painting updates until I have something to paint. I received an email at the week-end to say that my Duncan Rhodes paints have finally shipped, so taking shipping time (it’s literally on a ship right now), I will receive those paints in July.

From memory the stretch goals included half a dozen figures, but I will want more than that to put these paints through their paces.

The Horus Heresy game release has been interesting, and while I haven’t bought anything I’m going to pick up the books again and probably start a review series. I own 48 of the 54 books in the series, plus all the Siege of Terra books release so far.

On a related note I would like to paint one of each Horus Heresy legion using only Contrast Paints and see how they turn out. That one will require at least 18 new miniatures as well as some of the forthcoming new contrast paints.

Also looking at my table of leftovers I think that something I will do in a couple of months is look at rebasing my already painted miniatures. I have over 2,000 painted, and some of them aren’t based the way I would do it today.

Speaking of leftovers what wasn’t pictured are bits of cardboard and polystyrene I have been holding onto for years, but never wanted to interrupt painting my miniatures in order to scratch build terrain. Now I have a gap in my schedule for that.

Besides this I would like to run a short series about getting started painting miniatures for people thinking about making that a hobby.

In summary, while the old pattern of content will be changing, you can expect to see all or most of the following over the next 2-3 months:

Horus Heresy book reviews

Get started painting miniatures guide

Homemade terrain

Rebasing existing armies

Duncan Rhodes paints product review

Painting Heresy legions with Contrast

Something about the whole experience, good and bad, of setting this mad goal of painting everything!

The content will be changing, but the journey continues. I hope you can join me.

Good luck Dave with your new directions and we will still be reading this blog in 10 and a half years time.

On a possibly-related note, the new 40k Partworks magazine was released yesterday in local (AU) newsagents.

Just a couple of models and/or paints every week… might be of interest as something reasonably priced that you can keep up with the arrivasl/painting rate of?

Your post inspired me to look up where the UK is up to at Forbidden Planet and order 6 issues from there!

I’ve enjoyed the journey so far, Dave, and I’m excited for what you do next. It may even give me the nudge I need to get back to the Horus Heresy books and producing homemade terrain.

I haven’t read the older HH books for years and I have now started Horus Rising and I’m enjoying it more than I remember the first time!

Glad to hear you will soldier on! Lucky that you got a shipment notice! I’m still waiting for word on my Duncan paints. Though I only ordered a few to try out, before going too deep. Still very interested in testing them out though.

I think they shipped to Australia, Asia, and Africa first and their plan is to progressively ship elsewhere and hope that everything arrives at roughly the same time. Given the current state of shipping I don’t like their odds.

Repainting the rest of my citadel castle to match the two walls I just painted is definitely on my radar
