New chaos marine models

As the main antagonists in Warhammer 40,000 the chaos space marines have distinctly fewer models than their loyalist equivalents, especially in recent years where the focus has been more on Death Guard. There’s a new Kill Team box on the way that provides some relief.

I’m assuming that as with previous Kill Team releases these models will be later made available as their own box.

I’m not completely sold on the bare-headed models, but that can be managed with a few bits… I think.

You can see all the new chaos marine models at Warhammer Community.

I was never convinced by bare heads. Why have all that armour and then take your helmet off. Cinematic for sure but not practical.

Usually they provide helmeted options – so let’s hope they do again here! 🙂

That’s my hope, I think my spare helmets now are all plague marine leftovers, which I wouldn’t want to use here.

I’m liking the new miniatures but my pile of gray is already a mini mountain. I haven’t even opened my new Kill Team box!

I wish when they release kits like this they’d sell the upgrade sprue separately, even if only for a few weeks. When they put out the Cadians with an upgrade sprue of new heads and weapons I’d have snapped up the sprue (those new heads are great for conversions) but I had no interest in adding ten Cadian bodies to my painting backlog. Likewise I already have two sets of these Chaos Marine models, and yes they’re amazing miniatures and I’m enjoying painting them, but my backlog remains a bit of a mountain and money isn’t infinite so I’m really not in the market for ten more. They did it with the Black Templars and Necromunda so who knows, I’ll keep my fingers crossed that rather than just re-releasing the existing Chaos Marines kit with an extra sprue and a higher price tag they’ll sell these cool extras as an upgrade kit but I’m not holding my breath. I guess we’ll find out when the Tau Pathfinders from the Chalnath boxset get released separately, that should set a precedent for how they handle these Kill Team upgrades for the foreseeable.

I quite like the unhelmeted heads – my main gripe with CSM compared to loyalists has usually been that they all end up looking a bit samey. Granted, some of the bare heads work better than others. The head with the horn looks silly, whereas the CSM with the assault cannon looks really cool.
