Explore fantasy art: Jakub Rozalski

The cover art of the board game Scythe is probably most people’s main encounter with Jakub Rozalski’s art, but there’s plenty more than that!

Rozalksi manages to create some everyday life illustrations in fantasy worlds, as well as tense encounter scenes where the monster is not always obvious.

Some soldiers encounter a bear which has been mutated after an encounter with… something.

Mothers by Jakub Rozalski

Two mothers meet over the same food source. A contest, or an opportunity for cooperation?

Bait by Jakub Rozalski

A group of knights meet there quarry, but who is really the bait here?

Connoisseur of apples

Giant robots are useful when the best fruit grows at the highest point on the tree.

I love the concepts of these illustrations, especially the second one, Mothers. It is almost as if the painting is alive somehow. Great artwork! 😀

I think the last one was used in Scythe (board game). I haven’t seen the others before, but particularly like ‘Mothers’ and ‘Bait’ for the graphics, and that beautiful snow/haze in both. The two-sided encounters also provoke thought and a closer look at the images.

Doh! You did mention Scythe right at the beginning… and I missed it on first read! It’s a game I want to play, mostly because of his art.

I love Rozalski’s work! Did you already do a post on Simon Stålenhag? I think there are similarities there in both style and theme, combining the normal and the fantastic.

I wasn’t familiar with this artist but I’m incredibly impressed by it. It is moody fantasy art that makes you think! Can’t beat that 🙂

Some great artwork there, I love the two mothers one and I do like the old lady who seems to be gesticulating at the apple thief

I always figured she was telling him to hurry up and gather the apples!

Scythe is a great showcase for Rozalski’s work and worth buying just for that. I love the stories you can put to his work and each time you play the game you come up with something different.
