Squaring up to the Old World

Warhammer Community recently featured a Q&A style article about their forthcoming Old World game. They confirmed that square bases will be used, and that the rules designers will be dipping into many of Warhammer’s past editions when writing the rules for this game.

Of most interest to me was the new map images. We are gradually having things filled in:

There was also a zoom in on Kislev:

This revealed that the time setting of this game is a couple of centuries prior to the setting of Warhammer, well, the setting of Warhammer 4th through 8th edition. This puts the game in the years leading up to the Great War Against Chaos.

The Empire was weaker in those years, and the Colleges of magic were yet to be established, so it will be interesting to see what that army looks like – or whether separate Empire states will have their own forces.

You can read the article for yourself, but the game is still some time away. I don’t mind, it gives me time to finish all that painting!

Sometimes the articles at Warhammer Community come in a flurry and it can be easy to miss an interesting one amongst all the ads for new releases.

Part of me wants to get interested in this news, but the other part makes me wonder if it is going to be another flash in the pan which comes with much hype then either ceases to exist before it gets going like the Cursed city or just doesn’t make much so they pull the plug after people start investing time and money into it.

True, the Cursed City experience has made me wary of jumping into a new release with both feet.

The more I see of this the more interested I get. Glad to see it’s falling under the Specialist Games studio as well, they’ve done great work with Necromunda, Blood Bowl and Titanicus. My Skaven will rise again!

I missed this one too, so I’m glad you shared it Dave. It will be interesting to see how this shakes out. I was kind of hoping this wasn’t going to be a return to huge rank ‘n flank armies but then again, I’ll probably just paint minis that I enjoy from this and forget about the actual game. Either way, I’m looking forward to finding out more!
