Explore fantasy art: Keith Parkinson

Keith Parkinson produced many iconic illustrations in the 1980s and 1990s, from book covers, to Dungeons & Dragons art, and more besides. While he sadly passed away in 2005 he leaves behind a huge body of work that bring brings enjoyment to many. Here are just a few of my favourites.

The North Watch

Why is this dragon rider watching such a desolate space, and why does it need watching? I have never found out the answers to these questions, but I have invented many of my own.

Lord Soth’s Charge

A key moment in the original Dragonlance trilogy is the charge of Lord Soth and his undead followers, and that seen is brought to life (ha!) in Parkinson’s work here.

What do you mean, we’re lost?

Fantasy can sometimes be guilty of taking itself too seriously. This picture looks like a group of Draconians out to do evil, but the caption upends that assumption and makes you smile.

The gods of Lankhmar

I have seen this art elsewhere, heavily recoloured, but I believe this is a copy of the original work. Here the undead roam the streets of a very unhappy city.

Arcane Summons

The undead rise at a sorcerer’s command in this illustration. The details on each of the four figures in this piece never cease to amaze me.

You can see more of Keith Parkinson’s art at his website.

Some more great artwork there. Personally I reckon the dragon rider is waiting for the lost Draconians.

Keith Parkinson was also the regular box artist for the PC MMORPG Everquest Franchise – the forerunner to that little game that came later, World of Warcraft.

Yes, I hadn’t realised until I started this profile series how much Everquest art was done by the like sof Keith Parkinson and Larry Elmore.

I love his work, some of which is almost photographic in quality. That last one, Arcane Summons, is the cover to a Palladium Fantasy Role Playing Game expansion and it’s where I first came across his work – superb.

I thought I had seen this art on a book before, that must be it!

Yes, if I remember correctly it is Further Adventures in the Northern Wilderness. I have it knocking around somewhere but the colour is nowhere near as vivid as the image you have.
