Scent of a Gamer

From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.

Explore fantasy art: Brom

Brom’s art tends towards the darker end of fantasy, but that’s no bad thing. He’s illustrated a number of classic fantasy characters including Conaman and Morgana le Fey, but I have veered away from those characters for this round up.

Keeper of the Dead

This art appeared on a Magic: the Gathering card many years ago; I like it better by itself.

Platinum Angel

This piece is more recent than Keeper of the Dead, and also appeared on a Magic card – back in 2002, making it almost 20 years old now too. Time flies, like this metallic angel.

The Night Mare

This one is otherworld in a horrifying way; those old tales about elves and faeries were rarely happy stories, it must be remembered.

Elric of Melnibone

Michael Moorcock writes the best fantasy that no one has read, in my experience. If you’re looking for something new, check out his Elric or Runestaff series. Great fantasy that has leaked into many other works since it was first published in the 1960s and 1970s.

A video intermission

This video is a father and son video where brom is interviewed by his son, who currently works at Blizzard.

The Wild One

This elf looks more savage than noble. The spikes on the cave mouth behind him, and the skulls too give an air of menace. This is not the type to save travellers in peril.

You can see more of Brom’s art at his website.

I’d actually recommend Moorcock’s “Corum” series over the Runestaff. I do think Elric is his best work though….

White Wolf produced 2 omnibus editions, Corum: The Coming of Chaos and Corum: Prince with the Silver Hand, that contain all 6 Corum stories.

I always enjoyed Pratchett’s elves in that book and the Tiffany Aching books

All very nice! 🙂 I think I need to read the Runestaff series again, it’s been a while! And maybe the Corum series, based on Bookstooges’ comment! 🙂

Yes, I was thinking the same, I am fairly sure I was a teenager the last time I read the Runestaff books, and that was a few decades ago now!
