The unpainted pile of Dana Howl

YouTuber Dana Howl went through her pile of unpainted miniatures recently, and the final figure was high indeed.

As my own pile has reduced over the past few years form over 1,000 to under 200, I can sympathise with this situation. Dana’s collection is impressive, but I have found there are three things you need to do in order to seriously tackle the pile once it gets to four figures.

  1. Buy less
  2. Paint more
  3. Sell some things

I have done all of these over the past few years, and it was the combination of the first two that helped me. In 2018 I painted 177 models and bought 176. In 2019, I painted 270 models and bought 29, and have continued in the same vein since.

I had to let a few limited editions pass me by, including the same Sister of Battle limited release Dana bought, Blood Bowl second season, and a few Kickstarters. I have also gotten rid of round 200 of my models, realising that I would never paint them mainly because I was no longer interested in doing so.

The tray method has worked for me, and I will be interested in seeing what system Dana comes up with.

DAMN. That’s…a huge pile of shame. Not including what I have on the bench, though, I have a few dozen models in my own shame pile to get through, so no judgment here, lol. “Buy less, paint more” is probably a solid hobbying mantra to live by.

It’s a lot like budgeting. If your expenses out way your income, then you’re going into debt. Thanks for putting that into perspective.

Sorry to hear that you missed out on BB2020, as that’s a great boxed set. Though if you are not interested in those teams, you could just get the rulebook.

I’ve been buying way more than I should lately, especially paints. Once we’re back to work full time, most likely less of an issue. But yea, need to start looking at painting what I have now, versus shopping for more!

I did end up just picking up the rulebook for the set. It was sad to have to let that box go, but as with the Sisters I would not have painted them yet if I had bought them, so it was for the best!

My spending on paints and modelling supplies has definitely increased too!

If you have the 2016 set and the 2020 rules, you’re good to go. So you likely didn’t miss out on too much, unless you’re really itching to play Black Orcs/Imperials. I think most people feel lukewarm about them so far.

I have a huge pile of unpainted lead but I am so fickle that of I find things I remember the project and just want to start it. So I keep it all and live with it:)
