Warhammer animation

This weekend saw Games Workshop announce their forthcoming animation series. In short; there’s a lot, with a mixture of styles and storytelling evident even from the short snatches of footage that were shown.

Why didn’t they call it Warhanimation?

While I am most interested in Astartes II, there’s plenty of other series that may appeal:

The Warhammer Community article comes with a recorded stream that itself features a preview of one of the forthcoming series. The preview starts 50 minutes into the video, so you may wish to skip ahead. The preview is of the Angels of Death series, which is based around the Blood Angels.

We should see these series start to roll out in the second half of this year.

The Angels of Death looks very interesting, although if Blood Angels are fighting Genestealer Cultists I won’t know which side to cheer for!

I’m glad that formerly fan-made productions getting a chance to work with GW and like…hopefully reach a broad audience and get something out of all of the work that they’ve put into these projects. I have some mixed feelings about the announcement of what I assume is a paid subscription service, though, since Warhammer+ is going to be pretty niche.

I worry that the trade-off from the free Youtube platforms that fan productions had already established, which could reach wider audiences of potential new hobbyists and new fans, to a more insular paid service is going to kind of cut a lot of really good creators off at the knees, depending on what they’re making from GW and depending on what the subscription numbers end up being like. I also worry that if this “bombs”, that it will keep GW from producing or supporting this kind of content in the future.

GW’s precedent and the Battleforge app fiasco previous have me a little skeptical too, but…I guess we’ll wait and just see how it all plays out, and I’m looking forward to checking out a lot of these animation projects down the road, regardless.

Yes, I’d like to hear more detail on this Warhammer+ concept and what it means in practice.
