I would have purchased this model in 1994 or 1995. The important thing is, it’s painted now!
The photo didn’t come out quite as sharp as I’d hoped, this this model, old as it is, was still a joy to paint. Plenty of character and detail without being overwhelming with bits and pieces to pick out.
This is a one-part metal model, and from memory I paid about $25AUD for it back in the day. To buy a trio of Stone Trolls now, or Rockgut Troggoths as they are known, would cost $90AUD. So the price really hasn’t changed much in this case, and if we start accounting for inflation it becomes cheaper than it was (gasp!).
Imposing as this model was back in its day, it’s not much bigger than an infantry hero from the modern range. Here’s the Stone Troll standing next to the recently painted Mordor Troll for comparison.
The Mordor Troll wants you to say hello to his little friend.
While the troll may not stand as tall as he once did, I’m happy to have this in my collection.

Looks great. Some of these modelling on these old “toys” really stands up and like you I love getting stuff that has been around for a while done.

Nice work on a real classic, Dave. Wasn’t long ago when that model was still available new, either! 😆

I was almost tempted to pick up the new versions to see what the size difference is like!

Great work Dave, I had the set of the three of them for my Ork and goblin army. I am actually really enjoying painting the older stuff.

Thanks, and I have also been enjoying the old metals. I have a few wood elves and a few Bretonnians on this tray as well.

I am just redoing the Brettonians on and off… I kind of want to repaint my original wood elves, but haven’t really got the time or inclination.
