Scent of a Gamer

From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.

Explore fantasy art: Bastien Deharme

If I could pick one word to describe Bastien Deharme’s art it would be ethereal. His pieces often come with a dreamy quality that pulls me in to stare at them for a while. It’s no surprise that his work is in demand for book covers, card art, and computer and tabletop games.

Cultists on the Storm

A group of dark riders travel across a worn landscape under a foreboding sky in this illustration for the Gods game.

Ghost Ship

This illustration appeared on the Magic card ‘Ghost Ship’ and may just be may favourite illustration from Bastien Deharme.

Katai archer

This character figure was also produced for the Gods game. The small details, including the faces on the bow, really drawn me in to this piece.

Etrata, the Silencer

This vampire assassin from Magic’s plane of Ravnica is an unusual piece as we rarely see the city of Ravnica in this way. The city is darkened, and there’s a hint of neglect in the worn bricks and tiles. A change from the sunlit buildings we usually see.

Single female figures are a frequent subject of Bastien Deharme’s illustrations. With Sabbath I like how the purple skirt blends into the stairs behind her like smoke.

I think my favourite out if those is the first one. The rest are great, it I kept getting drawn back to it.

Katai archer reminds me of oil paintings of Maori chiefs and dignitaries. They are all beautiful, but that one struck a cord with me.

I’ve talked to a few people about his art, and they all said a similar things – that a particular illustration struck them – always a different one though!

Wow. Everything in here is incredible work. He is a master of darkness and light but also everything looks dreamlike and real all at the same time. Very impressive!

Yes, something I think I overuse the word ‘ethereal’ when describing fantasy art, but the term works here!

Etrata has it for me; it’s those eyes!
