Scent of a Gamer

From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.

Spider Queen

The first model from tray 7 is complete; this spider queen from Games Workshop’s Middle Earth range. This is the classic version oft he figure, by which I mean it’s in metal rather than resin. I’m not sure this model is still available in any material, to be honest. Anyway, here it is, in its dungeon home:

The model blends into its base but I assume you that is on purpose, since spiders tend to be good at blending into their background.

I added a splash of colour to the base anyway, using some contrast paints to create a slime effect on some of the rocks, to help break up the grey.

While I don’t play the game, I am still a big fan of the models in GW’s Middle Earth range.

Nicely done and favoring spiders as I do I favor this miniature highly. I remember reading that scene with the spiders in Mirkwood forest as a teenagers and promptly putting that scene in my next D&D game, except the chief spider of the grove could cast spells, which came as quite a surprise to the players and an introduction to (at least in my games) that memorizing the source/official material wasn’t very useful.

I think you did a nice job painting it and I like the base too. The bits of green add some nice, subtle contrast between the ground and the arachnid.

Looks really good, Dave! 🙂 I’ve avoided using “nice” since, well, it’s a spider (I’m OK with spiders, but maybe not enough to call them nice)!

Excellent work! I’m a big fan of the Middle Earth range from GW, especially some of the older models. Definitely good for alternative uses like you have done.

Thanks! I’m a big fan of this range too. I think it suffered a lot from their move away from using metal.

They are actually moving some models back to metal from Finecast, a very odd play but not one I’m going to complain about.

Its cool to see this classic model in an environment outside of Mirkwood. It definitely looks like a scary dungeon denizen to me!
