Arta Monday: Serra Angel

Serra Angel was considered a powerful creature in Magic’s early days. This is mainly because it was one of the few creatures which wasn’t awful. These days Serra Angel is a good card in limited and nowhere else.

When the card was reprinted in the 21st century it came with this awesome new art from Greg Staples. This isn’t the first Greg Staples illustration to feature in Arta Monday, and spoiler alert, it won’t be the last, either.

In this piece we see the angel, wings spread wide, against a cloudy sky. The reflection of light from her sword provides the brightest light in the illustration. This is a warrior angel, and the sword draws the eye and leads us to the armoured figure holding it aloft. She has a second sword, just in case.

Serra angel is definitely a classic card! I really like the art they use now. The old art, while great for the time, isn’t nearly as impressive now.

Yes, this version is my favourite for the card by far, though the original certainly has nostalgia value
