Dana Howl put up an very interesting video, reviewing her channel’s performance in 2020, and sharing some things she wishes she knew before starting.
I’ve always been a fan of doing a few things well rather than a lot of things poorly, and this seems to be part of the lesson – focus on what you’re passionate about, instead of chasing hits.
It’s a lesson I learned here a few years ago, and I know I can say I’m better off for it. Focusing more on interactions rather than views is something I have mentioned before, but it’s a huge part of what keeps me blogging.
2020 was a very successful year for Dana, with her channel growth enabling her to make this a full time job, which is great. It looks like we’ll see a few differences in 2021 though, and I’m looking forward to seeing how that turns out.
Given I intend to get into short terrain building clips this should be useful advice.

An interesting video that is useful for anyone starting a business – which is what most of the Youtubers are (whether that’s their initial intention or not). It’s great that people are so open about their challenges and what they’ve learned. I do miss the ‘hobby’ aspect of blogs and videos though, when the object is to share with others rather than to gain hits/views/$$$.
