Children’s book technology comes to wargaming

Okay so the title is a little tongue-in-cheek but Upzone is a new product range of literal pop-up terrain:

The project page makes it clear that this is simply fold-out terrain, just like a children’s pop-up book. Except for grown men and their toy orcs – like me!

Looking over the page I think this occupies a nice middle ground between flat neoprene gaming mats (look nice but have no height) and more involved terrain, which looks great but does not travel well.

Here we have something portable, three-dimensional, and good looking.

Check out the project page for full details of all three themes in this Kickstarter.

I love this idea, really reminds me of my childhood Richard Scarry favourites!

I like the of it, but wonder how things will last before they start to fall apart.

Yea, once I looked at the price…it just seems like you would be better off investing in a few good terrain pieces and work up from there. As they should last

I think the price compares will with other products that cover the same able area, but I would want to mix in other terrain too.

It’s a decent product but being mostly paper is a minus. The collapsible nature is a brilliant move though. Also I’ve had mdf terrain that didn’t hold up long, so who knows.

They have got the look and the portability right, but stability is still a bit of an open question. Hopefully it’s up to scratch.

I agree with Maeno that I think the durability is something they will have to prove with this product. I prefer something solid and tangible like the traditional terrain which takes more time to make but I do think this is a really cool idea and they will definitely find a customer base with people who want to save time on terrain. Thanks for sharing, Dave!

I will probably sit on the fence for this one too, but I may end up buying in later once we know more about the durability question.
