Hasbro has announced a new boxed game edition of HeroQuest. It looks as good as I could have hoped for, basically a modern update of the original game.
The twist here is that Hasbro are running an in-house crowdfunding campaign for the new version. The goal is $1 million and I expect it will get there.
However.
The game is only available to the US and Canada. That’s good news for my resolve to keep to my allowance, but it’s bad news for anyone else in the world who wanted a copy of this game.
It gets worse, as there are several figures which are only available through this in-house crowdfunding campaign. Why a multi-billion dollar company like Hasbro needs to invent crowdfunding for itself is a question for another day.
For me this is a sub-optimal way to re-release this game. Hasbro games are available worldwide, and it would have been good to have HeroQuest similarly available. At this point the game “project” is a glorified pre-order (a common criticism levelled at Kickstarter) so the region locking is mystifying as well as frustrating.
Still! HeroQuest is coming back, and fans of the game can rejoice… soon.
For those in the US or Canada, check out the project page as Hasbro’s website.
If the subscription goes off with a bang, which I think it will, I suspect that Hasbro will roll it out more widely.

Lets hope so. It might be time to dust off the old box sets!!!

The geolocking may be to do with GW licensing rights perhaps? Either way it is odd to go the crowdfunding route. That said other than nostalgia what are you getting really. Modern releases like Blackstone Fortress are much nicer descendants of HQ.

The website suggests this is standard for their Crowdfunding projects. It is odd to me that a company of that size would use crowdfunding (except it’s their own internal carbon copy of crowdfunding).

I really hope we get it in the UK 🤞

I’m sure at retail we will be able to buy it anywhere we could buy Monopoly and other Hasbro games. This US/Canada restriction seems common to all their in-house crowdfunding.

I heard recently that the Canada shipping price got drastically reduced.
I was also surprised by the crowdfunding aspect, but on the plus side it looks like they have already surpassed it. I guess Hasbro uses that model for niche products. Still seems really weird to me, but I’m happy to be able to get a copy of the game. The Mythic tier with the two expansions is really nice, as those cost an arm, a leg, and your firstborn on Ebay.
In a recent panel discussion they hinted at updated rules as another unlock. That would be really cool, but their stretch goals are super high and so far, not all that exciting. Will see!
