Once upon a Wednesday: showing off
I have long dreamed of displaying my painted miniatures. Over time, the logistics of displaying miniatures and keeping them dust free has eluded me.
Enter the detolf shelf from Ikea.
Since I originally posted this in February 2019, every shelf except the lowest one has been turned over. Some have been turned over twice. Each time I complete a tray, I choose a shelf’s worth of models to display. Perhaps in the future I will be able to get multiple shelves in the house.
For now I enjoy this one victory, and get to look at miniatures I have painted, which does encourage me to paint more.

The Detolf is a classic! Should you ever wish to increase the space for models, I think there are additional parts on eBays (as well as 3d printable ones) that allow you to add more shelves – although the airy space does make it look very nice.

I have thought about maybe just adding one shelf between the lower two shelves, and having a three-level dungeon display with stairs up and down… just need to find a friend with a 3D printer!

Not sure how it is where you live, but around here there are 3D printers in some libraries for public use. Or you can google for any local makerspaces! They’re also available for pretty cheap on ebay, if no printers are available 🙂

That’s a good point, there is a Makerspace about 20 minutes away from me, I should check them out

I can definitely recommend adding some extra shelves to your detolfs. Once you’ve doubled the storage, they almost look ridiculous with just the stock shelves 😛

Just be careful if stacking the shelves with metal models. I’ve seen a few horror pictures of this type of case where a shelf gave way (though I can’t confirm if it was the ikea model or if it had been poorly put together)

So far I have kept metal models on the lowest shelf only, I might just stick with that.
