Scent of a Gamer

From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.

Games Workshop August 2020 previews

Games Workshop ran another online preview session at the week-end. What follows here are my highlights, but the full set of previews can be seen at Warhammer Community.

The main one for me is the new Warcry boxed set that is coming. This one is themed around underground rather than surface skirmish combat.

I think this means that Warcry has replaced Warhammer Quest as the dungeon-based Age of Sigmar game. At least for now.

In Necromunda the theme of expanding the gang ox sets continues with House Orlock.

These are so far appearing in the order that the original gang boxes appeared for this version of Necromunda. This means the Van Saar box that may catch my interest will be fifth in line. This Orlock box is third, so I have some waiting to do!

Meanwhile this Warhammer Underworlds model made me smile:

I had a large Lizardmen army back in fifth edition Warhammer, around 5,000 points’ worth (a typical game size in that edition was 2,000 points). The original chameleon skink (a special character, I believe) is the only model I have left now, the rest having been sold off ages ago. The chameleon stayed since he was lost in a box when it came time for me to sell the Lizardmen army. It’s nice to see a new version of this.

Lastly, I had to look twice at these new Night Lords terminator models for the Horus Heresy line

Aaron Dembski-Bowden’s Night Lords trilogy formed part of my recent reading binge, and these really reflect the feel of those novels. I know I can’t buy all of the models, but it’s fun to dream!

You can see all previews at Warhammer Community.

Wow, they Warcry set looks verrry nice. I never cared for what I saw in the new Warhammer Quest stuff, but if this a decent dungeon crawler…I could get hooked in.

That Orlock box looks to have some really nice minis. Too bad I gave up on Newcromunda. But if I ever find some rules more to my liking, I could see me picking those up later on.

I like the doors as an updated version of the original Warhammer Quest doors

There’s a certain irony that the chameleon skink did such a good job of hiding from you! I do like the look of that model and I’m very curious to see the rest of the Underworld’s Lizardmen. I’m not that interested in Underworlds itself but the warbands can be handy as the basis for Warcry warbands. Speaking of which I’m very excited about that new boxset. New Orlocks are amazing too – I’d had my fingers tightly crossed for cyber-mastiffs, the new champions look great and we’ve got models for Orlock ladies at long last so it gets two thumbs up from me all round. Oh and fear not, the Van Saar may be closer than you think. They announced back in the spring that they’d be doing four gangs this year, one per quarter – with Van Saar as the last of these – but then pushed everything back because of the Covid. It’s not usual for us to have a schedule this far out but these aren’t usual times – Van Saar should be out in the first quarter of next year (assuming the world hasn’t ended by then!). What can I say, I’m a Necromunda nerd and I horde these little snippets of information! :-p

I’m very curious to see the Slaaneshi mortals that are planned for Underworlds – we’ve not seen many Slaaneshi mortals so far so it’ll be interesting to see what they do with them (that Slaangor that’s hinted at being in there for example has been a long time in coming!). Oh and the Slaaneshi chaos lord is amazing, I’m very tempted to get my mits on him. In fact it was a cracking preview all round, lots of things to bother my wallet with over the next few months! 🙂

Yes, if I wasn’t on a strict allowance I might have already preordered those new Ogryns!

I’m trying to stick to a strict allowance myself but with the caveat that I give myself free reign when it comes to Necromunda and Warcry. No point torturing myself! Mind you that did make this an expensive weekend!

Ironically I finished painting the original Warcry starter just as lockdown started in the UK. Subsequently I still haven’t played it. I am feeling like there isn’t a single GW line I can actually keep up with painting & playing at the moment except perhaps Killteam as I already have plenty of painted 40k armies. A great time to be a hobbyist, but so hard to stay focused 😉

Yes I think anyone who is motivated to paint by wanting to get a new army or squad finished for their next tabletop game must be struggling right now!

It was an impressive set of announcements to be sure. The new Warcry stuff looks fantastic but then again, so does the Necromunda minis… I’m glad I’m on somewhat of a budget or I’d be in trouble!

I’m slightly terrified by the amount of stuff coming out that I want to get!! And we’ve got the finale of Blackstone Fortress coming in a couple of weeks, too! 😳😬

I don’t care for anything, as I don’t have kidney to offer up to the chaos-god of forgeworld resin really, but I want that Skink, though the Dark Elves are nice
have you seen the rumor engine with the musket? I didn’t look very much like admech or Sky Dwarfs, I still haven’t completely given up on an Empire-rebirth

I think the success of the cities of Sigmar book last year helps those who want something like the classic Empire models to come back
