The camera revisits: Imperial Knight

A side benefit of the Once upon a Wednesday series is is being able to revisit old posts with a critical eye not just for the writing, but also for the photography.

Earlier this week I pulled up my old Imperial Knight post, and noticed the photos I took back in 2014 weren’t up to the standard I would post today.

I make no claims of master photography of course, but I felt I cold do better. So I dug the model back out of its box.

Now the images are sharper I can look critically at the model, too. There are a lot of choices I wouldn’t make today, for example using the medieval transfers. Also, while I don’t mind my blue and gold scheme I would handle both colours differently today.

I can be hard to see your own improvement when you just paint models on repeat, but I think I will put this model on the list of potential repaints – but I have a large collection to paint first!

That is definatley the down side of looking back. Whilst it is tempting to upgrade the posts and the photos I think on balance I prefer to leave the models alone. They represent my journey and fit with being lazy!

Looking good, I am following the Dave approach in general.

I like that, even though you might be able to do better now you should be proud of what you achieved then.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

It will take some time to repaint this guy but if you’re not satisfied then it could be worth your time. I agree with Pete that you should be proud of what you’ve done in the past regardless and even if you don’t touch it up, the knight looks great and ready for action!

Thanks! Repainting is always something I have told myself I will only do if I have no unpainted models left. That hasn’t happened in over 20 years, so we’ll see!

I haven’t done it very often myself. If I was low on money or had a small collection that I didn’t want to expand much further, I might do some repaints or touch-ups but for those of us with lots to paint and too little time, repainting is hard to find time for!

I’m doing some repaints right now. It’s easier when they’re old and battered models from the late 80’s or 90’s, though I usually try to preseve some (or most) of their original paint these days rather than a strip and go again. Your knight looks pretty good to me, though I do understand well how we’re often our own most critical eye.
