Via Polygon, Magic has announced its next Secret lair tie-in will be a single set themed around the Year of the Rat.
This set comes with 8 cards for $40 in its own special box. The cards are Marrow-Gnawer, Ink-Eyes, Servant of Oni, Pack Rat, and five copies of Rat Colony.
In case you aren’t aware, a deck can have any number of cards named Rat Colony in it.
The original Secret Lair series caused excitement and unease alike. Many players were excited at the opportunity to buy special edition cards directly from the source. Others were concerned about Wizards essentially entering the direct sales market.
Clearly the first exercise was a success for Wizards. Will we see one of these type of releases every month? I feel that’s unlikely but still it’s a big change to how they do businesses.
I guess we’ll see how this goes.
