Scent of a Gamer

From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.

MtG artists: Zezhou Chen

Zezhou Chen’s art first appeared on Magic cards in 2016’s Shadows Over Innistrad set, with a single card featured. Fortunately more commissions followed and there are now several dozen cards bearing his name art art style.

Zezhou works in both traditional and digital mediums to produce some striking illustrations for the game. Here are five of my favourites:

Adeliz, the Cinder Wind

Adeliz is one of my favourite cards and I’ve built around this legend from Dominaria in both casual constructed and Commander formats. She can strike with quite punch, as indicated by the art.

Angelic Purge

This is Zezhou Chen’s debut card, and shows the angels of Innistrad going from protectors of humanity to their executioners.

Deeproot Waters

The magical rivers of Ixalan each have their own guardian merfolk, who can often appear unexpected to drive away intruders.

Ravos, Soultender

I am not familiar with this character’s backstory but I assume he comes from Theros. This card appeared in one of the annual Commander packs.

Wardscale Crocodile

Amonkhet has huge creatures, but so does Ravnica as the dreadhorde soon discovered.

See all cards illustrated by Zezhou Chen here, or visit the artist’s website.

I didn’t think that any of the EDH partner commanders HAD stories behind them.
