From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.
Zack Stella’s work first appeared in the 2013 Theros set, and he’s illustrated over 80 cards since that debut. His art can be either bright or dark, and he has a keen eye for the kinds of details that surprise and delight Magic’s story fans.
Here are five of my favourites of his work:
This version still managed to reference Kev Walker’s original, with disintegrating bodies being drawn upwards. This time though we have Nicol Bolas front and centre as the cause of this destruction.
Elspeth, Knight Errant
Another reprint, this card shows Elspeth in Theros’ underworld. Her armour shows the wound from Heliod’s betrayal, and she has forged her death mask. This mask has the same points of light as her sword, suggesting she still enjoys a level of divine favour. Will we see Elspeth’s return? Maybe.
Soul of Theros
This avatar embodies the realm of Theros. The lovely starfield in the background is what drew me to this piece, but the central figure looks suitable imposing and glow with divine blessings.
The mood in this piece is suitably sombre.
An angel with a pair of flaming swords and a fiery halo charges forward. One of my overall favourites from the 2018 Commander sets.
