Earlier this week Wizards of the Coast revealed the latest (and last for a while) Masters set. Called Ultimate Masters, this set aims to bring a lot of beloved cards back to print for casual and competitive gamers alike.
The MSRP of this 24-pack product is $335.76. No, that is not a typo. This Ultimate masters set is being sold at a premium even compared with other Masters sets.
Each box also comes with an ‘ultimate box topper’ a single random foil card in a special pack. There’s one in every box, and up to 40 different cards are availalbe in this way. The cards can all be pulled out of regular Ultimate Masters packs. However the box toppers are all foil and have a borderless art style. Here’s an example:
The left side is the box topper version. I’m not a fan of foil cards, but I do like the look of these borderless cards.
At the time of writing no cards are confirmed in the set other than the 40 box toppers, but those cards will be revealed in a few weeks, as the set releases in early December. Hope you’ve been saving up!
You can see more, including all 40 box toppers at the preview article on Wizards’ website.
Naturally some will wonder whether enough Magic players will pay for this premium product. While I’m not one of them, I think the answer is yes. The most recent premium product sold out so hard it crashed the Hasbro website they were exclusively sold through. After that, people paid a significant premium on sites like eBay to get their hands on the sold out product.
I won’t be buying this, that is for sure. But I’ve got my eye on a couple of singles that should dip $10-25 and I’ll pick those up before they rise again.
How is it that a revised demonic tutor costs half the price of noble hierarch or cavern of souls? That is just completely unbalanced in my books…

No idea how many will be printed but yes, I’ll certainly be waiting for the singles on this one!

I’m looking forward to the complete spoilers but right now I just need one copy of Cavern of Souls and Noble Hierarch.
One thing I love about playing commander, one expensive card gets put in a uv protector and then I just proxy with the non-full art land cards. Put those pieces of trash to some use! And I get to use it in multiple decks without having to tear them apart all the time…
