Cthulu: death may die Kickstarter

Another week, another Cthulu-themed board game appears on Kickstarter. This one is from Cool Mini or Not, and it shows in that the focus here seems more on the miniatures than on the game.

Here’s the in-game shot:

The board is that tiny bit in the middle. Character cards take pride of place, and then the miniatures dominate the board sections they stand on.

The board game and all its unlocked add-ons and Kickstarter exclusives will set you back $100 plus postage. Or, you can pay $250 can get exactly the same package but with just on additional miniature. It looks like this:

Those guys at Cthulu’s feet are the red figures from the board game shot above, to give you an idea of how tall this model stands. This model is plastic and will apparently come as two pieces – the main body, and clip-on wings.

If you like your models to dominate the table, this one might be for you!

Check out the Cthulu: death may die project page on Kickstarter. The campaign ends soon, and is well and truly funded.

Heck, if I’m going to spend that kind of money, I’m going to invest in some quality cardboard!

Just what is it that makes all this stuff SO expensive?

But what about them is so expensive? Is it the limited run, the process of making the molds, etc? It’s plastic for goodness sake.

I can understand dual lands in magic getting more expensive as demand greatly outpaces supply, but this? I just don’t know enough (ie, almost anything) about mini’s to be able to figure this out on my own…

With plastic the expense is often upfront for the producer, as the models have to be cast in steel. Actual production is cheap, but set up is not, so they need to price carefully to make sure they don’t lose money.
