MtG artists: Craig J Spearing

Craig J Spearing has illustrated almost 50 Magic cards over the last few years. Of all the art he has produced, it’s probably a certain token that is most well-known. Here are five of my favourites by him.

Dukhara Peafowl (Kaladesh)

The artificers of Kaladesh specialise in producing lifelike replicas of creatures, as seen here in this peacock-like creature.

Seeker of the Way (Khans of Tarkir)

In a Tarkir that no longer is, Jeskai monks would travel the lands, seeking wisdom. Now, what remains of this order serves the Dragonlord Ojutai.

Risen Executioner (Dragons of Tarkir)

No matter where you planeswalk to, zombies are always an issue, especially when they have large axes.

Bladewing’s Thrall (Iconic masters)

This reprint art represents a very different take on the card, but I like the fiery wings.

Octopus Token (Battle for Zendikar)

Someone captioned this art with “Hit ‘im with your crossbow, Steve!” and so a legend was born. You can find the two figures in the foreground superimposed over other large monsters in Magic too, these days.
