Adventures in Warhammer

Warhammer Adventures is the latest new product announcement. I didn’t see this one coming. It’s a series of books set in the Age of Sigmar and Warhammer 40,000 universes, but aimed at younger readers, ages 8-12.

With this in mind, the character designs are recognisable but also quite different:

Everything has somewhat softer edges but it’s still the 40k universe. I quite like this move and hopefully it will lead to a new generation of fans of the setting, if not the games themselves. This may herald the release of ‘starter games’ aimed at the 8-12 market. There’s plenty of great board games with this level of complexity, but wargames tend to shoot higher. With the ongoing popularity of board games it would be nice to see GW tap into this a bit more, they way these ‘Adventures’ books seem design to tap into children’s and young adult fiction.

And now, finally pretty much from the Silver Tower launch in the mid-20-teens, not everyone is white – and in 2018, we’re starting to see females just mixed in (outside of 40k elves) rather than in their own segregated units and forces or the odd hero model.
