From the computer to the tabletop, this is all about games. Updated each week-end.
The Challenger decks release last week-end and the early signs are that this is a great new product.
In the past, Wizards have been coy about adding actual good cards to this kind of product. The previous incarnation, the Event Decks, were routinely so underpowered that one would be lucky t win a single game with them, never mind any matches at all.
With the Challenger decks, there are already reports of people winning or doing well at their Friday Night Magic simply by choosing a Challenger deck, opening, and playing with it.
This is a fantastic result not just for the product but also for the game. For all its breadth, Magic is not an easy game to get started in. There is no ‘beginner product’ that players can bring along to their Friday Night Magic to get started. I used to recommend Draft over Constructed for new players for this reason. Better to get used to the game on an even playing field, then consider completing a deck for Standard or some other format.
The Challenger decks have met their challenge. Let’s hope this becomes a regular, six-monthly release and that the standard remains high.
