Polygon has the article, but tabletop games are storming through the Kickstarter dollars right now.
Polygon has chosen to compare tabletop with videogames. Clearly the tabletop hobby is not 10 times the size of videogames. However it’s clear that the crowdfunding platform is more suited to board games than computer games.
The article doesn’t state this outright, but I believe miniatures projects are being including in this overall ‘tabletop’ figure. So while board games such as Kingdom Death are being discussed, projects such as Bones 4 would also have contributed. I’m also assuming that Kickstarters for .sts files which allow for 3D printing of tabletop terrain count too.
Of other note was that the average value of a funded tabletop project increased too. So not only are there more funded projects, but each project is (on average) getting more money than in previous years.
I’m not sure what 2018 will bring, but broadly I expect these trends to continue.
