Ryan Yee’s art appeared in earnest in the original Innistrad block in 2011, though a couple of illustrations appeared before then. His cards can always be relied on to provide a visual treat, whether a humble common or a special edition mythic rare. Here are five of my favourites:
Endless Ranks of the Dead
Not just my favourite card by Ryan Yee, but one of my favourite Magic card arts. I love the frozen moment presented by this piece, the calm before the storm.
Misty Rainforest
This version of Misty Rainforest appeared as one of the special Zendikar Expedition cards, only available in foil. It is still highly sought after.
Shape the Sands
This common card from Dragons of Tarkir shows an archer taking the long view.
Gateway Shade
This card is also a common, showing a ghost of Ravnica guarding one of the city’s many gates.
Command Tower
This card appeared in the first set of decks released by Wizards specifically for the Commander format, and it has become ubiquitous with almost every deck wanting a copy.

Hurray for Commander! I am now hooked on that format and pretty much only play that.
The only time I play 60card decks now is when a new duel deck comes out and I want to test it out. Played the new merfolk vs goblins yesterday with my bro and it was fun! While the goblin deck seems pretty much the winner 4 out of 5 times, I still like playing the merfolk. My first real homemade deck back in the 90’s was a mer deck based on Lord of Atlantis. Now there’s some nostalgia for ya 😀

My Magic playing is heading in a similar direction and I also picked up the Goblins and merfolk duel deck, I think it’s the best one they have release in the last couple of years.

I concur about goblin vs mer. I really liked Elspeth vs Kiora and then Zendikar vs Eldrazi, but after that, I’ve not liked them. So I was hesitant to buy this one. But merfolk, that drew me in and I’m rather glad I did.
My brother doesn’t play much, so him winning with me fighting as hard as possible is just the kind of game I like and it encourages him to play 😀
I will take a knock down, drag out fight and lose over an easy win any time. I like the process itself, you know?
Sorry, fanboying there 😉

Winning is nice, but it’s all about playing, I agree
