Codexes are coming back

Confirmed via the Warhammer Community website, codexes will be making a return to the new edition of Warhammer 40,000.

My incredible detective work leads me to conclude that our first four codexes will focus around the war between chaos and the Imperium, with Space Marines, Spiky Space Marines, Grey Knights, and Death Guard being featured in the image above.

I must admit to a level of surprise, as I’d expected that the new 40k would follow the Age of Sigmar model and move to faction scenario books, while keeping model rules freely available online.

Also, is that some classic Wayne England art on the Death Guard codex cover?

…and already people are getting bent out of shape about it, whining about their Index Astartes 1 being rendered obsolete so quickly. Despite the fact that we know that the Marine Codex is always first out the gate pretty quickly after a new edition and GW even *telling* us that the codices won’t be far behind…

Yeah, I felt that GW were pretty clear that these were bridging products designed to keep people playing in the new edition, until more detailed rules for their factions appeared. As you say, Space Marines are always the first cab off the rank, so no surprises there.
